brief

Say Their Names

project details

Type: Social Design

Deliverable: The intention of this poster is to promote awareness, and actively encourage viewer empathy and critical action on the topic of police brutality and the pervasive loss of life experienced by African-Americans in our country.

Year: 2020

Field: Socially Conscious Design, Public Awareness

The poster is inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, and the rallying cry of protesters, “Say their Names.”

To emphasize the pervasiveness of this issue, the poster lists the names of African Americans who have been victimized by police brutality and have experienced deadly force. A finger print pattern was created as a textural element to signify the culpability of the U.S. justice system, which overwhelming targets and incarcerates communities of color. The names, rendered in bold, all-caps typeface, encourage the viewer to become a witness, taking in each individual name, but also grasping the stark totality of this systemic violence.

The resulting poster serves to illustrate the power of awareness and solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement – by naming anti-blackness and racism and paying tribute to those lost to police brutality, the viewer is invited to become an agent of social change.
